    TEETH—A New Chapter in My Smile
    Life sometimes hands us unexpected twists—like missing a few teeth here and there from old infections. Instead of patching things up piece by piece, I decided to take a bold approach: have the lower teeth removed and set the stage for a fresh start with a permanent retainer that screws into the jawbone.
       
    Do I ever wonder if it was the perfect decision? Of course! But hey, that’s the magic of life—we don’t get a rewind button, only a big bold “play” button for what’s next. I chose renewal instead of patchwork, adventure instead of hesitation.
       
    Sure, I still question myself now and then—but guess what? The train has already left the station, and I’m riding it with a smile, curious about where it’ll take me next! Yes, my lower teeth have been extracted. A new world of eating and chowing down has opened before me.
       
    This isn’t the end of my smile—it’s the beginning of a stronger, healthier, and brighter one. And every time I grin, it’ll be a reminder that sometimes the boldest choices bring the best transformations. In the end, I think things will turn out perfectly, as my bright smile lights the way.

    If you don’t know where you’re going, life can feel aimless – sometimes even pointless. Having a purpose in life that you can feel and live out can turn a humdrum activity into a passionate endeavor. Knowing your purpose will give you the drive you need to reach excellence. Writing this blog is my purpose.

    A journal can help you understand yourself and your life in new ways. This includes your motivations and your emotions – writing about them can be a great way to narrow down on your passions and your life purpose. Writing these blog posts helps me in numerous ways.
         
    3. Accept Help from Others
    You’re not alone out there – we all need other people to grow and develop. But if you start growing arrogant, automatically feeling like you know better than others, you can end up losing out on valuable knowledge and experiences.
       
    4. Help Other People
    Conversely, helping others is another excellent way to become the best version of yourself. There are numerous benefits to social activity and the sense of community that comes with it – you’ll be mentally stimulated, you’ll learn new skills, you’ll be healthier, and you may even live longer.
       
    5. Challenge Yourself
    When you stop finding new challenges to face, you stop growing. The ability to be vulnerable is also essential here. Take risks (within reason) and you’ll discover new aspects of yourself. You may be surprised at the situations you can get used to and even master, as long as you put forward some authentic, constant effort.

    9/6 — Juggling? Writing? YES!
    All morning,
    I worked on the new blog format.
    I hope you like it.
    Please send me your thoughts.
       
    Today was a day I was scheduled to go out and juggle on the big lawn. Often tired these days, I was exhausted today, so I just stayed inside and worked on my writing. Besides that, it was raining (again!) You hear of nice sunny Florida, but we have had more rain than I have seen before.
       
    I juggled three balls over the bed for a time. The 3-ball juggling is feeling better, but previously, I didn’t even have to think about it to have the balls dance in my hands. Maryann was there too, juggling on the other side of the bed. Like many beginners, she tends to throw forward with her left-hand throws.
     
    9/7 — An Adventure?
    Today is Sunday—a day that feels made for little adventures, like walking a couple of blocks to Publix for a few treasures (okay, groceries). I had the itch to wander out, stretch my legs, and feel the breeze of freedom on my face. But nope—the rulebook here says I need a chaperone whenever I step outside. Honestly, it feels a bit like being in a play where I’ve been cast in the role of “Prisoner of Overprotection.”   
     
    Now, I understand—some individuals here do require that kind of watchful care, and that’s essential. But me? I know I could strut to the Publix Grocery Store and back without missing a beat. Still, I won’t go full rebel against their rules (tempting as that may be!)   Jail? Here? Me? — Naw.
       
    So instead, I’ll treat this like a game. If freedom is the prize, patience and creativity are my superpowers. I may not be walking to Publix today, but I can walk laps in my mind, take a journey through my imagination, and remind myself that my spirit is far too big ever to be locked up by silly rules.
       
    Because here’s the truth: even when walls feel high, our thoughts can soar higher. And that, my friend, is the sweetest freedom of all. So, stretch your mind to think of ways to advance in your life. Remember, there is no limit to how high you can go.
         
    Today, my fingers weren’t just typing—they were breakdancing across the keyboard, twirling, leaping, and sprinkling stardust with every tap. The ideas came rushing in like a joyful parade, each one waving a little flag of possibility.

    9/8 — This Blog
    Can you imagine what life would be like if I didn’t write this blog? Honestly, I can’t! Writing helps me remember, reflect, and connect—and hopefully it inspires you, too. Have you started writing yet? If not, maybe today’s the day. You never know who might need your words, your story, your spark. As I share with you, you can share with others. That’s how the ripple spreads.
         
    Memory, memory—how’s yours these days? After a brain injury, memory can feel like a tricky puzzle with a few pieces missing. But here’s the good news: even puzzles with missing pieces can still be solved and be beautiful. Figure out your puzzle, it will take you amazing places!

    My Daily Quest
    My New Adventure
       
    This morning, Physical Therapy greeted me with pedals and persistence. I rode the bike—yes, rode it (a stationary bike)—and my asthma stayed politely in its corner. Victory. Mary Ann cheered me on like a quiet coach, steady and encouraging. Funny how thoughts scatter, tumble, and collide while I’m pedaling. They make remembering feel like chasing butterflies in a windstorm.
       
    Then came Speech Therapy with Lilly, sharp-eyed and steady. She pointed out (again) how slippery memory can be. I wrestle with it daily, but maybe this writing—words stacked at the close of each day—will become my net to catch those butterflies.
       
    What will it take to see the improvement I crave? I don’t feel I’m sliding backwards, yet the echoes around me suggest otherwise. I don’t like that tune, not one bit. However, I will continue, because that is the nature of life’s ups and downs.
       
    The afternoon rolled in with Occupational Therapy and Terrie, our field trip captain. We plotted strategies, laughed about forgetfulness (“Did I forget, or am I just playing a trick on myself?”). The store became our training ground. Terrie’s watchful eye followed me through the aisles. Did I pass? Maybe not. But hey—tests are dull. Adventures are better.
           
    Today brought me through my therapies with a smile. First, Mary Ann guided me through some balance work (and trust me, I needed her steady encouragement). Then it was time to hop on the exercise bike—pedaling forward, one mile at a time, both literally and figuratively. After that, Lilly took me through memory exercises that stretched my brain like a mental workout. It’s hard, it’s fun, and it’s progress.
     
    And here’s the best part: Lilly asked me to email her daily with updates on what therapies I do. Why? Because she truly cares. She’s not just doing a job—she’s passionate about helping people grow and heal. Isn’t that refreshing? Passion is contagious. I hope you’re chasing your passions, too. Life shines brighter when you do what you love.
         
    Having Terrie as my coach, my therapist, is a good thing. She reminded me that my memory is not so good, something I admit, I don’t like to hear. Yeah, that sting is real. We went over a number of things we covered yesterday, and I forgot many of them.
       
    Even when the messenger is kind, having a gap or weakness pointed out can feel like a spotlight you didn’t turn on. At the same time, you’re noticing the care behind it—that Terrie’s heart is in the right place. Both truths can coexist: the discomfort of being reminded, and the warmth of knowing someone’s rooting for you.
       
    9/9 — Therapy Time
    The day kicked off with Diane leading us on a group walk—fresh air in the lungs, feet in rhythm, eyes on the world around us. Next time, I’ll bring a bag and scoop up stray trash along the way. A moving meditation and a chance to leave the trail brighter than we found it.
       
    Did I feel like a dog on a leash? I could’ve sprinted ahead—my legs were itching for it—but the group kept me tethered. I did cut the walk short, though, because my fingers were calling me back here. This little blog has turned into my favorite playground, and I didn’t want recess to end.
       
    Speech therapy was canceled—Lilly’s out sick.
    I hope she is alright.
    The universe flipped me a “skip turn” card.
       
    Then it was Terrie time. We unpacked what I’d written yesterday (yes, I may have been a bit sharp, but I swear my heart carried no malice). Then came the dreaded memory game: numbers hiding in a grid, smirking at me like tricksters. Not exactly my idea of a fun time. But I played, and—plot twist—I actually did better than I did in the last round. A small win tucked into the boredom.
       
    For now, this is joy: writing words for you, stacking them into this blog, puzzling them into some kind of order. Who knows where it all leads? The future is a wide-open page. But today, I’ll keep chasing the words—unless, of course, my fingers fall off. Until they might fall off, I will keep typing words for your perusal.
         
    Just hopped off the phone with my sister, Willow—though to me she’ll always be “Kath.” She’s been my rock for so long, always showing up in ways both big and small. After my accident, she didn’t just visit me in the hospital—she anchored me there, reminding me that family is a kind of medicine you can’t get in any prescription bottle.

    After my accident, she even took on the epic task of driving my 1975 VW411 all the way back to San Diego from Atlantic City. (That car may have been stubborn, but she’s tougher.) And that’s just one story among a whole catalog of moments where she’s stepped in, cared, and carried more than her share.

    And then—because the universe decided to double down on goodness—about an hour and a half later, my phone rang again.
    This time it was my daughter, April.
    Our talk lit me up.
    She’s glowing with excitement, with her little one due at the end of October.

    There’s something magical in her voice —a mix of anticipation and joy that only comes when life is about to unfold in the most beautiful way. She promised to call more often (music to my ears) and shared how well things are going for her and husband Jake. Their path forward looks bright, solid, and full of promise.
       
    Two conversations, two hearts that mean the world to me, all in one day. It felt like the universe dropped me a reminder: love shows up in a thousand different forms—sometimes as a sister who drives across the country for you, sometimes as a daughter whose laughter carries the future in it. Today I’m holding both close.
         
    9/10 — Off to the Races
    By 9 a.m., I was already sprinting into therapies like it was the opening lap of a grand prix. First up, Terrie. We revisited some past exercises—my mind grumbling, “I don’t really like . . . “—but she kept me on track.
       
    One test had me tapping a moving dot on a huge screen, quick and precise. Basically Whac-A-Mole, but with higher stakes. The hardest part? Not the tapping—it’s shutting down the little voice that insists I’m doing badly (spoiler: that voice doesn’t help).
     
    Terrie reminded me—again—about strategies I tend to forget. Not my favorite thing, being called out on that. But hey, if the tools sharpen the brain, maybe they’re worth the sting. She mentioned this could help with driving. Considering I’ve logged thousands of miles post-accident without incident, I had to laugh. Still, better safe than sorry.
       
    Next came Dino. Speech therapy, kind of. We barely touched on speech drills, because our conversation detoured into ChatGPT and how it could analyze my books and spit out fresh word treasures. He’s got a clever mind, and I like that he lets me play with ideas instead of just drills.
         
    Then Mary Ann had me back to juggling. Three balls in the air over the bed—starting to feel smoother, cleaner. I’m catching my own sloppy throws faster, which is its own little victory. I told her (again) that I’d love to wander across the street and practice outside. She (again) gave me the “liabilities” speech. Fair enough—it’s her job.
       
    But it’s funny: I’ve walked and run across parts of the U.S., New Zealand, Australia, and Europe without so much as a scratch, yet here I can’t cross a quiet road.
    Contained, yes.
    But I’ll juggle anyway.
       
    Now I’ll feed these words into ChatGPT and see what magic comes out.
    It’s always a surprise what bounces back—kind of like juggling, but with words instead of balls.
    And, with this blog, I don’t drop (well–sometimes–sorry.)
         
    9/10 — Charlie Kirk
    Yesterday, Charlie Kirk left this world far too soon. He packed more living into his years than most manage in twice the time. His fingerprints are all over the good he sparked, and he’ll be missed deeply—by me, and by countless others.
     
    Charlie’s faith was in God and Jesus. Mine is in questions, in doubt, in the spark of human wonder. And yet—we both burned with conviction. His life reminds me: belief or no belief, what matters is how fiercely you live, how you throw your energy at shaping the world.
         
    I’ve never subscribed to any of the thousands of gods humanity has dreamed up. And if I’m called before one someday? Well, I’ll simply say—”You know what proof I needed—you never gave it.” If that lands me in some so-called hell, then the blame rests elsewhere. Besides, the Bible never mentions “hell” the way pop culture paints it.
       
    Charlie’s passing stirs the old paradox: why do bright lights flicker out early?
    Maybe the better question is—how brightly will I shine while I’m here?
    Are you going for the gusto?
       
    9/11 — SALSA!
    Today wasn’t a “therapy” day in the usual sense. Instead, I served up a different kind of medicine: Salsa. My therapy of choice. One big batch, shared with everyone, and the reviews came back hotter than a jalapeño in July.
       
    Remember my salsa? If not, just say the word, and I’ll be happy to pass the recipe along to you. Patricia Ferrari of West Chester, PA, once wrote me after tasting it at Booths Corner Farmers Market >>

    Even the therapists wanted in—I’ve now officially supplied the whole crew with the recipe.
         
    I’ve traveled and explored my way around the world, making salsa along the way. Visiting and making salsa in California, Europe, Colorado, Australia, Pennsylvania, Japan, and New Zealand. No matter the continent, one constant—happy eaters everywhere!
       
    On a more serious note, I joined a phone call today with six others, all talking about how I’m doing here. No bad comments—music to my ears. Still, talking with some of the other patients reminded me: some people have been in places like this for years.
    That’s not my path.
    I miss my freedom.
    I plan to claim it back.
    For now, I must wait.
         
    9/12 — As my mind clicked on, I looked over at the clock: 3:33 am. It looks like I slept well.
         
    First thing, my current joy, working on this blog for you.
    It comes out later today.
    I have to make sure every letter and every word is in the right place and necessary.
    That’s one key to good writing: have just the necessary words, nothing more.

    The therapy today was to assemble the planter that came in. Initially, Terrie helped, then she had a patient to attend to. My next therapy was with Jules on Speech. She helped me move the planter project forward. She pointed out some spots I did not articulate clearly, so that was my therapy.

    Worrying about the future doesn’t change anything; instead, it prevents you from enjoying the present. So, even though I have gone through major changes, I must not worry about what “might” come up. There will be more changes, just as there will with you; we can’t dwell on any “bad” that might come.
     
    My latest major change is the extraction of all my lower teeth. I’m having to use my tongue to push stuff up against my upper teeth, which are still there, to chew. A strange way to eat, but I’ve gotten used to it. This is a strange change that I signed up for. It’s quite difficult, but in the end, things will work out well.
       
    Redirect your energy and focus on the aspects of life where your efforts can make a meaningful difference, rather than on situations and outcomes that are beyond your control.
       
    Don’t worry about things you can’t control.     8/30–There was a wasp in the hallway walking around. I decided to save him, in that he could never live in his current situation. I put him in a cup and put a cover over it. I walked outside and let him go on a bush. That made me feel good. If you ever have the chance to help a bug, do so.
         
    It’s strange to have clean fingernails.
    Normally, I have been in the dirt planting and working in gardens.
    Being here, I do not work the dirt; I miss it.

    8/31–Sunday today, things are very slow.
         
    9/1–On this Labor Day, there was a hamburger and hot dog barbecue outside. I went out to join them and got a plate of potatoes and beans, along with one hamburger. I had forgotten I had no bottom teeth to chew with, then the burger had to go in the trash.
       
    Nice to see everyone went outside. There were plenty of wheelchairs and canes. I’m glad that I am doing better than many of them. Inside, where the bedrooms are, I often hear yelling and moaning. At times, this is like a real hospital. It kind of scares me. The guy across the hall from me is often moaning loudly; they just have to sit with him.
           
    9/2–At about 4 am, someone came by and said they were “making their rounds.” I had already been up, but it is hard to understand why someone has to “Check on me.” It seems I’ve lost my privacy, which is a difficult thing to face.
       
    Went to a follow-up visit to the doctor. He had drawn blood last time and it was sent out to a lab to check it. He said everything looks great. That’s good news, in that I want to live beyond the age of 100. Will you join me in making this a goal for yourself?
       
    9/3–This morning, as a group, we went to https://cleantheworld.org/
    Sorted used soap again. Before it goes out to people, it goes through a big sanitary process. What comes out the other end is wonderful, used soap.
       
    I found a place of grass about 5”x7” where I can juggle! It will be better than juggling in my room. Yet, my asthma comes up so quickly when I just throw things around.

    9/4–This morning, I went back to the Podiatry doctor about the plantar wart he took off. Things have healed well, but he wants to meet with me again in four weeks. I don’t know why, perhaps just for the payment from the insurance company?
     
    I worked on my juggling today with the help of my therapist, Maryann. Things are getting better and better with my throwing things in the air and catching them.
       
    9/5–My juggling is improving daily, I like that.

    I went to the dentist to have work done. I had lost some teeth due to infections. So I had all my lower teeth pulled and am awaiting a retainer that will be screwed into my jaw to replace and improve my smile.
     
    I am facing such a big change by having my lower teeth removed, now I am questioning whether I should have done it. Right now, it is hard getting used to this new life, but I have gone through life-changing things in the past.

    8/23–So strange not to have my bottom teeth anymore.
    WHY WOULD I ASK FOR THIS BIG LIFE CHANGE?
    Yesterday I bought some tangerines, forgetting I had no teeth in my upper jaw. I could not eat then, with no teeth to chew.
       
    For breakfast this morning, I ate one ripe banana. I could grind it down with my upper teeth, and it was tasty.
       
    8/24–At lunch today, they brought me a whole sandwich, which was cut into bite-sized bits. With no lower teeth, I have no way to chew, so a sandwich does nothing for me. So, no food today, but that is alright, I have no hunger anyway.
       
    I headed to Geek Squad for help with my non-working Google Voice.
    It turned out that they did not know how to fix my problem. So it remains.

     
    Maryann came over to my room and helped me with my posture and juggling. She pointed out several things I need to correct. So, it was an excellent session today. Of course, I am helping her with her 3-ball juggling, and I am seeing improvement.
       
    MaryAan pointed out that I have a slight tilt of my head to the left. So, have been walking with my head tilting more to the right. It feels wrong, but looks just right when I do it in front of a mirror.
       
    I’ve told people that a “real” juggler is able to juggle 5 balls. That is one of my goals: to get a smooth 5-ball pattern going again. Additionally, I feel overweight, so I need to lose weight. Juggling practice will help with that.
    I want to be as perfect as possible when I leave here.

       
    8/25–Not much happens here on the weekend. Rain, again, soaked the area. I was planning to go out and practice my juggling on the grass, but not on the wet ground.
         
    You might know, when I was juggling in the past, after my accident, I was using the wrong muscles to juggle. I would drop my left hand before I threw a club or ball. Somehow, my mind has gotten over this, and I can throw normally again. I may not juggle 7 clubs again, but my 3 club juggling is looking better and better.
       
    8/26–Worked more on my juggling, and things are looking better, thank you for your suggestions, MaryAnn. You are analyzing and pointing out mistakes I make, including my normal standing and walking. Thank you for that.
       
    Today, with my juggling, I managed to keep it going for quite a while and was surprised that the pattern did continue.
         
    Today I am watching a video that I have not seen before.
    Primarily, it is Matt Dillahunty and Seth Andrews, smart guys.
    I have never believed in any of the gods humans have developed.

    8/27–Therapy today helped in various ways, a good day.
       
    8/28–Today I went to the dentist to ask about getting a temporary retainer for my bottom teach. He told me there was nothing that would work right. So, I will have to wait six months for the bottom jaw to heal. That is so long without teeth, I guess I will become very skinny before then.
       
    Sometimes food gets stuck in my esophagus and will not go down. I have to go into the bathroom and put my finger down my throat. Things eventually get unstuck, but it is hard to go through.
       
    I’ve had the operation done twice before. I am put to sleep, then a tube is inserted down my throat and inflated, then removed. My body relaxes into this and I am free from things caught in my thoat for a couple of years.

    8/29–In speech therapy today, Lilly is working with me and wants me to keep a journal of therapy sessions, which is a good thing that will help with my memory.

    Right now it is Friday, 6 pm, and I recently published my blog 337. Did you enjoy the read?
               
    Talk about a challenge, having no teeth on my lower jaw is interesting. I have to use my tongue to push food up against my upper teeth, chewing it smaller to swaller (as they say.). This is difficult and delicate work that must be done.

    I feel that my drive toward challenges is one of the main things that helped me find success again after my accident and 37-day coma.

    BLOG 338–Challenge Yourself!
       
    Challenging yourself is important for personal growth, increased motivation, improved happiness, and developing resilience. Challenging yourself helps you learn new skills, overcome obstacles, and build confidence. By intentionally pushing beyond your comfort zone, you expand your horizons and experience new things, ultimately leading to a more fulfilling life.
         
    I first experienced a challenge back in Jr. High School when I took up juggling and unicycling. That is how I got better and better. I would compare myself to my past self and to top jugglers, always striving for more. That is what must be done for any goal that you have in life. Through my juggling efforts, I achieved the world record of juggling 7 clubs at the time. 
     
    This passion continued in high school when I took up pole vaulting. I had my best jump at a height of 18’.6”! This was a record at the school. I did the same for my salsa business. At one point, I went daily to a farmer’s market, a festival, or a fair and sold salsa. This, along with selling the salsa in 25 food stores, has been a success.

    Speaking of high, back in High School metal shop class, I built a 14-foot-high unicycle, which, of course, produced another challenge. I lived for changes; that was my life. Always bigger, always better, always moving. That was the life I had, and you can find this for yourself.

    MY DAILY JOTTINGS >>
    Each week goes by so quickly.
    It seems that time is passing more quickly.
    You must live joyfully, daily, for each day!
         
    Do you know what you did last Monday?
    Do you remember what you ate for dinner last Thursday?

    8/16/25–Awakening early, as usual. I have no hunger, but my bottom teeth, which I recently had removed, hurt much. I soon received a pill for my pain, and I’m much better now. I could have left the teeth I had in my lower jaw, but more teeth needed replacement.
       
    Eating is such a habit. I am not hungry, but I want to consume nutrients. This is because I have not been eating anything. I plan to do a two-day fast, and I’ll complete it quickly. (Why is not eating called a “fast”, after all.

    At 3 in the afternoon, I went across the street to do some juggling. It felt great to be out in the bright sun. I’ve been inside for many days. I kept the juggling clubs flying well. Even behind-the-back throws went smoothly. I thought I would be unable to reestablish my juggling, but my mind has shifted now.
        
    Someone always has to be with me, so Terry came along. I tried to teach her to juggle 3 balls, but she couldn’t understand, and her juggling was a mess. I was tired due to lack of sleep, so I didn’t stay long. But I was there long enough to see that I could reestablish my 3-club juggling. I used to juggle 7 clubs, so 3 should be no problem.
       
    8/17–Had a better sleep last night. Crawled out of bed at about 5 am. My mind is still a sleepy head, so what do I do?
       
    No hunger is grabbing me this morning, so I will continue not eating and wonder if I should have had all my bottom teeth pulled. Well, too late, now I live with this. It doesn’t hurt not to eat; I am doing fine. Do you need to stop eating for a time? Do it, it’s good for you.
       
    This morning I was watching CBS, a show I like. On the show was a man who, because of a stroke, can no longer move from the neck down and cannot speak. This man amazed me, he writes music with someone who reads his eyes and a letter chart.
         
    This man can write amazing music in this way, simply by using his eyes to pick out letters and create a song. I was impressed.
     
    8/18–I was going to start eating today, but I am not hungry, so I won’t.
       
    An Occupational Therapy session was scheduled at 9 am, it was postponed because the therapist was not around. And, later, I was supposed to be with someone outside to work on my juggling, but no one ever showed up.
       
    For dinner tonight, there was lasagne, which looked very good. So, I broke my fast (but I broke the fast very quickly). But I couldn’t chew anything, no bottom teeth. So, only a bit of the lasagne was consumed. Yet, I am still not hungry at all. As usual, life goes on, not seeming to care in any way.
       
    8/19–This morning, I’m going for lab tests. They will be checking my blood and its composition. For this reason, I was told not to eat or drink anything last night and this morning. Of course, I have no hunger, so I am alright with that.
       
    Not sure if I should have had all my lower teeth removed. With no teeth, I cannot chew anyway. This is very difficult now. It is another life-change that, at this point, I have no control over. I might have to say that it is interesting, that’s just about it.
       
    8/20–As a group, we went to help at cleantheworld.org/. As you know, I’ve been here before. We boxed up bars of soap. I ended up boxing up ten boxes, whereas others put together 5 boxes. I work quickly on tasks like this. We basically put recycled soap bars, melted together into new bars, into boxes, 40 to a box. I work fast doing this sort of thing. I completed ten boxes, while others completed five. 
       
    Mary Ann helped me with my balance and basic stance. I saw in the mirror how I needed to change. My body has taken up a wrong look. Whenever I passed by a storefront, I noticed how I would droop my head, and I didn’t like that about myself. I will have to consciously apply this and make a new look with my body and my presence.

    Let me tell you why I decided to have my bottom teeth extracted >>
    Eating without bottom teeth can be very painful. It is still a delicate area where my teeth were. When I eat, I have to push food up against my upper teeth to break it down before it can go down my throat. A new way to eat, but I wish I had upper teeth to chew.
         
    8/21–I went to a doctor about what is called a Plantar Wart. It was on the ball of my foot and often hurt. He whittled away on it with a knife, then put on some liquid to kill whatever was there.
       
    A plantar wart is a type of wart that appears on the soles of the feet, specifically the plantar surface (the bottom of the foot). These warts are caused by the human papillomavirus (HPV) and can be painful, especially when bearing weight or walking. They are typically characterized by a rough, thickened surface, sometimes with black dots (dried blood capillaries).
     
    8/22–While I am staying here, I want to get anything that is wrong with me fixed. As you know, I plan on living past the age of 100, so I always want to make the best life I can! This is something you can do–to always aim toward joy and excellence THE REST OF YOUR LIFE.

    Finding joy in the little things means appreciating the simple, everyday things and moments that often go unnoticed, like a kind gesture, a beautiful sunrise, or a moment of quiet thoughts. It’s about cultivating happiness in the present moment, now, rather than waiting for grand events.
       
    Enjoy the little things in life because one day you’ll look back and realize they were the big things. By making every small thing great it will make your entire life magnificent.
       
    The art of finding joy is the practice of cultivating comfort, gratitude, and contentment as a basis for your life. It involves actively seeking out the positive aspects of your circumstances and surroundings, no matter how small or seemingly insignificant they may seem.
       
    The true magic of love lies in its ability to turn ordinary moments into extraordinary thoughts and memories. We didn’t come along only for the sunny days, the chocolate, and roses! We also look for the silky dark nights, the moonlight, and the stars.
         
    Seeing the little details in life involves intentionally appreciating your everyday moments and experiences that often go unnoticed. It’s about cultivating gratitude, being present in the moment, and finding beauty in the ordinary things.
         
    This can be achieved by savoring morning moments, connecting with nature, practicing gratitude, celebrating small wins, and slowing down to truly experience life. Finding joy in the little things is about appreciating every moment and simple pleasures.

    From a biological standpoint, we are hardwired to focus on the negative; you must change that. The human brain has evolved to naturally pay more attention to adverse events and experiences than positive ones; this is known in psychology as the negativity bias.
       
    For our ancestors, it served them well and allowed them to survive immediate threats like animal attacks and deadly weather conditions. While this negativity bias still has its place in alerting us to potential threats today, it can limit our ability to notice and appreciate the good in our lives.
       
    The reality is that so many of us are feeling tired and weary. When we’re distressed and stuck in a cycle of stress, we can become easily triggered, perceiving even small challenges as threats. With our nervous system constantly on high alert, it becomes challenging to focus on the positive—the things that are going right, the micro-wins, and the bright spots in the everyday.
       
    When it comes to soothing a weary nervous system, there is a balance we can achieve by acknowledging our triggers while also embracing and savouring the fleeting moments that spark a sense of joy, happiness, and well-being within us.
       
    While triggers—whether they stem from memories, situations, or interactions—alert us to perceived dangers, glimmers are little cues of safety for the nervous system. They are micro-moments that bring a sense of peace, joy, happiness, or hope and help the body return to a more regulated state.
       
    The warmth of the sun on your face during a morning walk, having your loved ones in the same place and space, the smell of freshly brewed coffee, or seeing a dog’s head out a car window are just a few examples that can elicit these positive emotions.
         
    The beautiful thing is that once we start to seek out these glimmers actively, we realize that they are all around us. It’s all about perspective. So, how can we keep our eyes open and ourselves present to these moments and appreciate them more often?
       
    Set an intention. Begin your day by setting the intention to capture one precious moment or glimmer. This shifts your mindset and primes you to look for the good in your environment.
      Slow down. In our fast-paced world, many of us operate on autopilot, simply going through the motions. This state of being makes it harder to notice the pockets of joy in everyday life. Slowing down on purpose allows you to experience and engage with the present moment fully.
       
    Keep a journal. Write about your glimmers and precious moments. Journaling helps you remember and reflect on these positive moments in your life. Plus, you can revisit them as often as you need and find inspiration for where to see more in the future!
       
    Take a picture. Capture the moments that bring you joy and happiness. Pictures serve as visual reminders of these moments and can help you appreciate them even more. Create a moment. You don’t always have to wait for these positive moments to unfold naturally—sometimes, you can create them. Think about what brings you joy and comfort, and bring it to life.     Practice gratitude. Practicing gratitude helps you focus on and appreciate the positive aspects of your life. While it doesn’t eliminate negative experiences or feelings, it strengthens the body’s capacity to take in and hold onto the good.

    MY DAILY JOTTINGS >>
    Each week goes by so quickly.
    It seems that time is passing more quickly.
    You must live joyfully, daily, for each day!
         
    Do you know what you did last Monday?
    Do you remember what you ate for dinner last Thursday?
    Keep track of your doings for a few weeks; you will see your time differently.
    Remember, the quality of your life depends on what you do each day, in every moment.
      
    8/8–Awakening at 2 am, up for the day I am.
    Mexican for dinner tonight.
    I guess I do like it here.
       
    8/9–Awakening at 2am gets old. I am hoping to find a doctor for my sleep problems.
     
    I heard from Linda after she read the words in my blog. She asked me to remove the photos of her from Facebook. The whole relationship seems strange to me. I would love to be with her, but I am wondering if she is real.
       
    8/10–In physical therapy, I worked on balance. Mine is still way off. I am just wondering if practice will help, or if it’s my brain injury.
       
    I’m discovering that my words in the blog are very open, and I do hope to hide nothing. That is good. I am looking for help from your end, too.
       
    8/11–I was waiting a few days before I wrote words here, but I have already forgotten. I must work on this blog daily to keep up. I do hope my words add to your life.
       
    8/12–I awoke at 3am and, surprisingly, was able to get back to sleep until about 5 :30. So, I can get back to sleep, that is.
     
    I am wondering how long I will be here. I know there are people who have been here for many years, I do not want to join this group. My freedom is gone; they even open and check any mail that comes in for me, no privacy at all
       
    8/13–Hmm, what did I do yesterday?
                Hmm, what did “you” do yesterday?
       
    8/14–ANOTHER BIG CHANGE!
    I just returned from the dentist. In my lower teeth, I had some infections in the past and had to have a few teeth extracted. I came to the decision to have ALL my lower teeth removed, what a change. mysagedental.com was great to work with.
     
    My mom had dentures, upper and lower. She never let any of us kids see her without her teeth or even see the dentures.
       
    I will return to Sage after my mouth heals, which should be around 8 weeks. When I do, they will fit me for a retainer. This retainer will be removable. In the future, I plan to return for a permanent retainer that is screwed into the bone in my jaw; I just couldn’t afford it right now. I will let you know.
         
    I’ve meant to go on a diet, only drinking green tea. Now it looks like I will have to. But I’m sure the kitchen would make meals specifically for me. Yet, I want to lose weight and be in better shape, so here I go.
       
    Right now it is 5:30 pm and my mouth hurts so much! Makes me wonder if I should have had the teeth extracted, but it’s too late now. I had to put in some comedy. Near the point where he had extracted most of my teeth from the lower jaw, I said, “I’ve changed my mind, please put all the teeth back in. He knew he couldn’t, as I did, too. It was a quick release of comedy.
         
    A strange thing about today: the guy who pulled my teeth extracted all the bottom teeth. Then he started to pull the teeth on the top. He started on one tooth, and I had to tell him it was only the lower teeth. I guess he was not told the plan. I’m glad I spoke up.
       
    8/15–I awoke in the middle of the night, again.
    I forced myself to return to sleep, and it worked.
       
    In therapy, we had a relaxation session where we lay on the floor, surrounded by nice sounds and a woman’s voice. This hurt my neck, but I stayed.
       
    The time is 11:00 am. I have not eaten anything today, only drinking green tea. The therapists and nurses do not like that I am not eating, but that is alright. No solid food ingested, and I feel a-ok. No hunger whatsoever,  I will not eat for, hopefully, a week.
         
    Now it is 2:09 and I still have not eaten. I am still drinking green tea.

    A self-supporting life can be a better life.
    A garden would be a part of that life.
    You must look into it!
       
    Because I am back on the road.
    There will be no more words about the garden.
    I do hope Beth keeps it up.
    We put a lot of effort into establishing our vegetable garden.
