    ====================

Finding success is a matter of discovering what you love to do,
developing a passion for what you love,
then completely delving into that passion.

You WILL be victorious if you:

    Keep things natural.

    Challenge yourself.

    Take the time to juggle.

    Make rational, educated choices.

Continue to make small perfections toward everything.

Make decisions quickly and then keep following through.

    Measure and record your progress.

Stop now and then to enjoy nature and the outdoors.

Drink more water, eat more salads.

    Juggle some more.

Get outside to walk or exercise on a daily basis.

Do something nice for your friend.

Spend your time around like-minded people.

Stay positive and learn from mistakes.

    Keep juggling.

    Praise others for their success.

Don’t have concerns about making everything picture perfect.

    Decide and take action—NOW!

Be busy toward advancement, not wasting time.

    SMILE!—you’re making it.

I do hope you like reading my words,
please let me know how they might help you.

    WORDS TO INSPIRE YOU! >>

Inspirational quotes and motivational sayings have an amazing ability to change the way we feel about life and can change our thinking.

This is why I find them so interesting, challenging, and important on our path to joy and happiness and finding ways to inspire ourselves as well as others.

Inspirational quotes and ideas provide us with a quick and timely burst of wisdom to get our focus back, offering the inspiration needed for the day or occasion.

I hope to inspire you with my words.
    Words have power.

At any age, you can (and should)
make changes to make your life better.

You see, the way you think and feel about yourself, including your beliefs and expectations about what is possible for you, determines everything that happens in your life. It all derives from your quality of thinking.

When you improve the quality of your thinking,
you change the quality of your life—sometimes instantly!

Just as positive words can make someone smile, and/or, a well-timed amusing quote can make someone laugh, your own thoughts react to the world in real-time. You have this control!

In fact, you have complete control over only one thing in the universe — your thinking — and that’s where motivational quotes come in!

To keep your motivation, you have to use each day as an opportunity for improvement, to be better, to get a little bit closer to your goals. It might sound like a lot of work—and with your busy schedule—next to impossible. But you can do it!

    Self-talk is so important—THINK RIGHT!

Motivational words, yes, they’re just words.
But they’re positive words; they will keep you on track.

Remember, you are only as young as the last time you changed your mind.
Keep your thoughts and self-talk fun and productive and always reaching for advancement.

Very little is needed to make a great life.
I hope these words I pick do help you.

BE INSPIRED BY THESE WORDS >>
The following is from my book series, “Beyond Your Potential”.

    Bring on the Passion!
The writing of this book was not made into a passion for at least twenty years. I had written the outline and knew where I wanted to go with it, but just couldn’t, or wouldn’t, gather up the passion to tackle it.

Then, one day, I said to myself,
“You must start. You must help other people.”

That is where my passion came from, knowing that I was helping you in your life. So, I let it take over. Now it is the only thing on my mind, and I am pressing myself to write quality words to help to advance your life.

To be successful, you have to learn to take on the responsibility. Remember that success is continually accomplishing goals that are worthwhile to you. Excellence and success are not so much trying to reach perfection. Rather they are the continual process of improvement of your life and the people around you.

    Success!
As a star juggler on stage, I had to maintain my drive toward excellence in my juggling skills and performances.

You can have success regardless of the direction you take your life. Success is the continuing progression of being motivated to become more while striving toward brilliance. As with the writing of this book, the path to success is always under construction. This path should lead away from you always.

Continually strive to run down that path, knowing you will never reach the finish line. It is a progressive path, not an end to be reached. To be successful, you must develop a certain drive forward toward your target and not let anything get in your way. Achievement is a habit that you can and must develop for yourself.

Success is a journey, an adventure, not somewhere you end up. It’s not the goal of success that’s the big payoff; it’s in working toward your goal where the payoff really happens.

    The Drive
Come to think of it, after what I went through, I could have just given up and stayed in bed and been a tomato – I mean a vegetable. I’m not sure where I got the drive, maybe from juggling. I do know that everyone can have that drive – if they push themselves!

The sad thing is that so few people truly push themselves toward excellence. Things in life are always changing. Make things happen for you and live life to the fullest. Successful people are those who do what they have to do, not just what they want to do.

Problems can be our opportunities, if we look for the good in things that happen. This is called opportunity awareness. Look for opportunities in everything that happens. From the accident, I learned that I had the opportunity to motivate others with lessons that I learned.

Plenty of Room at the Top
Think success in everything you do. Make it a habit. You will then do the things necessary to bring success into your life. When I was first learning to walk again after the accident, therapists would take me for walks holding onto a belt that was around me to keep me from falling.

The first time that I walked outside, I noticed a bush on the side of the path. When we approached the bush, I jumped over it. My therapist got mad, but this was something I had to do to prove to myself that I could. I knew I would not fail.

First, you have to analyze yourself and know that you can do it. I never do anything while thinking defeat. I knew there was plenty of room at the top; I just had to find a way to get there. As I was moving forward, I focused on improving my own performance, rather than hurting anyone else’s progress.

What does success mean to you?
Success means different things to different people. For many people, success can mean mansions, private jets, limos, and trips to exotic islands any time they want. To others, success is having a healthy baby. To some, it might mean being able to juggle five balls. Still, to others, success is a good job.

It is not what you get that makes you successful. It is what you are continuing to do with what you’ve got. Real success is working toward a worthy ideal, for your benefit and also for the benefit of others – rather than at their expense.

    MY DAILY JOTTINGS >>
2/15—Time for a dentist for a cleaning. Actually, this happened twice now. I called and let them know I just want a cleaning. They examined me and told me I need a “deep” cleaning, and would need one each year. The cost is around five hundred bucks!

Of course, I said no and left the place. Yes, they are in business to make money, but to want to charge me for something I didn’t need—that’s just wrong.

Needing more firewood, I went out toward the forest nearby. This is actually Sumter National Forest—a magnificent place. We must explore more of this great land in the future. I did find some good wood for the fire.

    Sumter National Forest

2/17—A visit to our friend Mea to get more wood from her to use in the fire, on her land is much. Mea would (wood?) chop it up with her chain saw as drove around her land and discovered downed trees and limbs. We obtained enough to last us a while.

2/18—With Lee we went to Steven’s Creek where we will wed, to show her how to get there and checked out the area. This is a place, I think, that not many people come to. But I saw, on both sides of the road, people discarded much rubbish. I will have to return the day before the wedding to clean the area.

Right near where our wedding will take place.

We are expecting a minimal number of people to attend (will you be there?) The temp is showing that it might be up to 26.66 Degrees Celsius (that’s about 80, for you that don’t know the language.)

Should be a terrific day for the wedding of Beth and me. As I wrote before, you will see photos next week.

    INTRO TO THIS WEEK >>

I’ve been thinking about my accidents and how they changed my life. I am hoping I learned some things that will add to your life.

After my first accident, I learned that each year over two million people on Earth suffer a brain injury. Modern medical practices have led to the saving of more people suffering severe head trauma.

Statistics show that there is only a five percent mortality rate through brain injury. Of the ninety-five percent who survive, many will have multiple and permanent physical, cognitive, or emotional impairments that may require intensive rehabilitation.

With all the wars going on more and more military people are returning with brain injuries. For them, life has changed, life is a challenge. Through this book, I want to show you that there is hope for your future.

One of my goals is to help other victims of traumatic brain injury, as well as their family and their friends. Those who are close to a brain trauma victim must accept the probability of physical or mental disability in the person for years, possibly for life.

This acceptance leads to a more constructive and supportive attitude toward the victim. All brain injuries are different, and, with many other factors involved, you can never know what the future will hold for that person, but it does not have to be the end of the story.

Through support and understanding, wonders can happen.

No life is without traumas. Eventually, we must all confront events that test our limits. The key is to use these changes in a positive way toward our future.

YES, IT CAN HAPPEN TO YOU.

We tend to see ourselves as invulnerable and can take life for granted. I never dreamed that I would be hit by a truck, let alone twice. And, I never imagined I would spend a month of my life in jail. You never know what will happen at any moment of your life that can change it forever.

WITH THE RIGHT TOOLS, YOU CAN OVERCOME ANYTHING.

By reading about my experience, you can begin to absorb some ideas to get over your own trepidation’s and get on with tasks in your life. But, that may be difficult, as you move forward toward the excellence that you possess.

You may come across many difficult responsibilities in your quest for excellence. No matter how strenuous these tasks may appear to be, I want to not only give you the confidence to face them, but specific and practical methods to conquer them.

BE AWARE THAT YOU WILL RECOVER.

In working through recovery from my accidents and changes, the ups and downs brought new awareness to my life. We can all enjoy the opportunities for pleasure and progress that are available, no matter what might happen.

YOU HAVE MORE POTENTIAL THAN YOU KNOW!

These books will show that buried in all of us are undreamed powers of healing and growth despite difficulty and crises.

DREAM OF YOUR PERFECT LIFE, WORK OUT THE STEPS TO GET THERE, AND THEN START.

One of the hardest things to deal with after a significant life change is the lost dreams and the loss of the potential that we had before. I was a world-class juggler before the accident, and Ballys Casino was my first significant step up the ladder of success. I was on my way to stardom as an entertainer—then my first big life change came.

I had to face the fact that I would never juggle like that again.

When a person goes through a major life change, their whole world of potential comes to a halt. Then, surprisingly, an entirely new life must be created to see the new world of potential that opens up before us.

I am now speaking and writing to help others with lessons I have learned from experience. Also, I developed and found success with a fresh salsa business in which the salsa has thousands of satisfied customers – www.summerssalsa.com/ . If you want, let me know and I will send you the recipe – kitsummers@gmail.com

I do hope you like reading my words,

2/5,6,7—Finishing the painting of the fire room, looks so good. As I wrote before, we are going through the entire house painting and decorating as we go. So, as you travel through the house each room will have a different feel.

And, I moved the dryer, so I had to drill a hole for the dryer air to go, a good project.

2/9—Today is my mom’s birthday. She died eight years ago, I miss her much.

I drove over to the house of James Butler, who Beth used to take care of. He died at the age of 91, just a few months ago. Like my mom and Mr. Butler, death is coming for us, too. Get serious about life, look for the joy that you can find, and help as many people as you can to live a better life.

I went over to Mr. Butler’s to look for dead wood for our fire. It had rained a few days ago, but the lawn felt solid enough, so I drove out on it to search for wood. It turned out that the earth there was too soft, still. I got stuck in the mud!

Beth came over to comfort me, nice.

Being a member of AAA, I called to have someone come out to help me get out. They ended up coming from about 75 miles away; there was no one closer to help.

Before he drove back to where my van was behind the house, we took a walk back to survey the situation. The rear of the van was against a pole coming out of the ground, so I could not back up, and forward was no go.

The back tires had dug into the grass and I thought I would not leave. The AAA guy was scared of driving his truck back because he said it might get stuck, too. Could imagine, calling a towtruck to get your towtruck out?

He checked the pole that was in the ground behind my van and was able to remove it. Next, he jumped in my van and maneuvered it going backward, then forward, and drove the van back out to the road.

It shows me, once again, that there is always a way to accomplish something. I was so happy he was able to rescue my van.

For you, I know you have been in bad predicaments. You made it through and moving ahead. For this reason, there is no need to ever have worry again.
    YES, YOU CAN COME BACK!

1/10—Beth and I went to visit Mabrey Lyon, an old friend of Beth.
    https://www.facebook.com/mabrey.lyon

They live on a very large piece of land. Cows and horses used to live on this land, now they are older, no more animals. Her husband, Johnny, took us on a tour of the lands on a 4-wheel drive Polaris Ranger. So many trees and hills, it was beautiful.

Part of their land was right on Steven’s Creek, very nice. On 2/22/22 at 2:22pm, Beth and I will be wed. This will take place downstream a little way right along the creek. You will see photos of the wedding in the future.

I am hoping that one day soon we will visit again with Mabrey and Johnny.

The main reason we went to visit was that we could use dead wood for the fire. With a big forest, we obtained much. There is someone Beth knows of who delivers firewood and even stacks it. But I like the price better like we found yesterday.

So many trees in the area, we will find much more in the future. I look for pieces that are about six feet in length. When we get back to the house, I hold the wood as Beth uses a chainsaw to cut it.

2/11—A bright sunny day, Spring is on the way.

    MY DAILY JOTTINGS >>
This week we are finishing up the painting of the fire room. Came out nice, let me know what you think of the photos.

Using three different colors that go together well, that is what we applied. Usual painters, because it takes too long to use different colors, paint the entire inside of a house the same color, then use gloss paint for the molding and such.

Living in different colors brings a certain joy to your mind and life. We plan on making each room a different color and environment. So, as you go through the house things will be different as you go.

Using masking tape you can make very defined lines to keep the paint inside. We would also do some freehand painting. When a little yellow goes into the red paint, after drying, go back and touch up the pumpkin. You keep doing this until you find perfection.

Where does your home need a paint job?

We plan on making each room a different color and environment. So, as you go through the house things will be unique as you go.

I never went to school or learned from a painter; I learn as I go. I never took any writing courses or studied writing books, but I’ve written fifteen books. My first, Juggling with Finesse, sold over 25,000 copies. I learn as I go and “I” make things turn out right (or write?)

Something I have told people in the past, am telling you, now –
If someone else can do it, so can you!
You just have to find the way that
    will work for you.
You can use this advice for any task. Thinking in this way will give you the confidence necessary to achieve!

Even after going through my first accident and 37-day coma, then getting hit by another truck some years later, I still strive toward things I don’t think (or others don’t) that I can do. Demand self-drive in yourself.

The key to my success is to challenge myself! That is a major thing I did to keep moving ahead through my changes. That can add so much to your life. Constantly challenge yourself toward the excellence that is within you, begin today!

Do you challenge yourself enough in your life?

“Since this week’s blog is about enjoying the remodeling of our home I thought you should know about the joys of remodeling our lives to go with the home.

The painting and sanding and fixing parts of the house have been mostly easy. Kit is positive, upbeat, and joyful; sometimes that can get on my last nerve. I have a mostly anxiety-filled, depressed personality.

I have been afraid to venture out of my comfort zone for so many years, and when I do, it’s a huge big deal. Although, with him in my life, I have been truly happy. Even somewhat joyful. He brings a child-like demeanor, which it seems, I needed. (not every day, of course).

Living alone for 8 years, I’ve learned to fend for myself so having assistance is hard for me to accept. Just do things my way and all will be well. I need my space.

But no, Kit likes to test my resolve and encourages me to try something new and I fight against it, but because I love him so much, I give in and do what he suggests, and well, it’s OK.

Everything is going to be OK. I have “bad” days where I wonder what he is doing with me. I question his motives. I have serious trust issues. He could find someone easier to live with. He could find someone more positive to be friends with.

I am not used to having a man who actually enjoys being around me all the time. No one else could stand me for any length of time. Kit is supportive of me and stays with me when I have a meltdown. He comforts me and works with me to just breathe and relax. He is so good, I feel I don’t deserve him, but I am so glad he is here.

I could have stopped there but I don’t want to make him out to be perfect. He has some nefarious (the word we use around here) ways about him. I’ll save them for the next blog. haha!!”

    INTRO TO THIS WEEK >>

As you know, I am not currently traveling. I will keep my inspirational words coming your way, I hope they add to your life.

A couple of posts in the past I had asked you to write to me and let me know if my blog words help. I heard from a few people; thank you for that. I heard from my old friend Dick, who wrote >>

So, I heard from enough people to keep posting each week. I do want to hear from you, too, please do.

I’ve been thinking about happiness lately and what it takes to stay happy. Happiness and joy can be such a big part of your life. But, many people stay unhappy and miserable, so sad. Always remember that happiness and joy are a constant choice. You can’t just “be” happy, it is an attitude that you always have to aim for.

Something that I am very happy about is the upcoming wedding of Beth and I. We have grown so close, so quickly; this is what I have been looking for in my life. How about this – the wedding will take place on Twosday, 2-22-22, at 2:22 in the afternoon – Boy, that’s a lot of twos!
The small wedding is to take place in the wilderness and we will each have big smiles and look at our future with joy.

It’s worth taking a moment to consider what makes us truly happy and where happiness comes from. Is it from things like having a fantastic meal, allowing someone to love you, having a healthy in-shape body, relaxing on the beach, juggling in the wilderness, or drinking a good cup of tea?

Those things all are great that happen, but they aren’t the reason for your happiness, They might be related to your felicity and they occur along with happiness, and then we are happy at the same time. Yet it’s far from a cause-and-effect relationship. There’s another circumstance that’s happening at the same time.

That event is what happens in our brain between the external event (such as a good cup of tea) and our state of happiness.

    For example >>
    We read a good book.
    Eat some delicious chocolate.
    Juggle.
    Have good sex, etc.

Perhaps we notice the chocolate, pay attention to it. If we don’t pay attention and are reading a book as we eat our chocolate, we don’t get happiness from the chocolate. Focus is the key.

This quality we’ve noticed on the chocolate or what we are focused on causes us to be happy about life. We are now happy about the experience of chocolate, living, about life itself – because each experience is filled with quality — even if it’s just the better chocolate.

Take the time. Noticing and appreciating the goodness in the chocolate causes us to be happy about life. And the more you notice and appreciate ourselves, the happier we will be and it continue to be a part of our life. It is really about your process of what happens within and what you take from the experiences.

Let me emphasize this – all the raw material you need for happiness is right there inside of you! The good things you can appreciate to be happy — they are always within you! We just need to take the time to see the joyousness that is there. It’s the same details that bring the most joy.

What are the things within us that we can appreciate, that can make us happy? Some examples:
    Are you great at something?
    Are you determined?
Are you good at certain sports?
    Are you creative?
    Are you a good listener?
    Do you feel compassion?
    Do you give?
Do you take love? Can you give love?
Do you understand with the pain of others?
Do you recognize beauty in nature, in others?
    Do you have good ideas?
Remember, the more of these you acquire, the happier you will be.

See the little details in life—look closely at the food you eat, and the coffee, water, tea, or wine you drink. If you make all the little details in life a joy, you will be happy! There is always more good to be detected that you can recognize, that can make you happy to be alive, yes?

So the happiness procedure — noticing, appreciating, being happy about living — can be applied to things within us, no matter what’s going on the outside. We can learn to notice and appreciate the good things in ourselves, and start to love ourselves.

Once we can do this, we can see the wonder in every small thing around you, and inside you. And then you realize that life is a true joy, in every moment, if we simply pay attention and appreciate it.

Remember, very little is needed to make a great life.
I hope these words I pick do help you.

BE INSPIRED BY THESE WORDS >>

    Look for the good.
Look at your life and see what’s working, and don’t push away something just because it isn’t absolute. When good things happen, no matter how small, see them.n

Be close to others who make you smile.
Studies show that we are happiest when we are around others who are also happy as you. Stick with people who are joyous and let them rub off on you, as you help them.

    H
    old on to your merit.
What you find true, what you know is just, and what you believe in is all measure. Over time, the more you honor these traits, the better you will feel about yourself and those you love, which will show to others.

    Conceive of the best.
Don’t be afraid to look at the best and see yourself doing the same. Many people avoid this process because they don’t want to be disappointed if things don’t work out, or think they don’t deserve it. The truth is that envisioning getting what you want is a big part of attaining it.

    Do the things you love!
Perhaps you can’t always play at the park or take vacations every season, or things you love, as long as you get to do the things you love every once in a while, you will find greater felicity.

Find a reason for your life.
I work hard to inspire others, which brings me joy. Those who believe they are contributing to the well-being of the human race tend to feel better about their own lives. Most people want to be part of something greater than they are, simply because it’s gratifying.

    Listen to your self-talk.
Careful about what you say—you are the only one who knows what you love. You are the one who knows, your family and friends may think you would be great at something that really doesn’t fit you. It can be complex following your walking on air.

Push yourself, and help others, toward excellence.
It’s easy to feel that, rather than you, someone else is accountable for your satisfaction. Yet, the reality is that it is really your in charge of your life! Once you realize that, you will have the power to get where you want to go.

    Be ready for change.
Change is hard. Even if it doesn’t feel good, change is the one thing you can’t get away from. Change will happen, no matter what, so make eventuality plans and emotionally be ready for changes.

    Stay with the uncomplicated pleasures.
A few are those who love you, treasured memories, silly jokes, daily successes, warm days, starry nights—these are the ties that bind and the gifts that keep on giving. Keep with the small pleasures and joys and you will find much more.

COMPOSE A NOBLE BOOK AND WRITE A BEST-SELLER.

    MY DAILY JOTTINGS >>

1/22—Snow today in McCormick, SC, not a usual thing. Jemma, our dog, did not know what to think when she went out in the white stuff. I think there were over 3 centimeters (I still think the metric system is a much better system to use) fell, which melted quickly through the day to nothing.

1/23—Continuing to paint the fire room, things are going well, as you will see from the photos. Beth and I are both working on our house projects, it is fun.

How about your abode? Do you live in excellence? It is a choice you make to live how you do. Some new paint in a room adds so much to your life. Paint and improve what you can to make your life better—the cost is minimal.

1/25The horses are back! Because of a horrific windstorm, the neighbor’s barn was damaged, so the horses were put into a different field. We brought carrots out to give to the four-legged large beasts. Jemma tagged along, as usual, and ate her own carrot (it amazes me that a dog eats carrots just because a horse does.)

1/26—We needed wood for the fire, so, because we have a forest right in the backyard, we went out to gather. In the moist ground, we also found and saw little tiny snails, along with various fungi that were very colorful and delicate.

Out there we also found shrooms (mushrooms, of course.) You will see a photo of a tiny one. Tiny little mushrooms, all kinds of moss and fern, petite snails making their home. It was a magnificent find.

    How about where you live?
Have you checked out nature in the area?
What are you finding where you are?

1/27Today, as we were watching TV, a story came up about dogs. The dogs were on screen. Our dog, Jemma, started watching—it was amazing. She jumped up on the TV stand trying to reach the dogs! She was so focused on the pooches on the silver screen, it was adorable. I have always wondered if a dog can actually see what is on TV, now I know.

1/28—Back to painting the fire room. To remind you, this room has a fireplace and in the middle of the house. Burning wood for heat is a great way to find comfort.

A strange thing today. Beth and I were out and when we returned to the house our compost bin was missing from the front of the house. They left a pitchfork that I used with the compost. There were other tools on the porch they they left here.

We think it was revenge, for some reason, from someone we know. Such a strange thing.

    INTRO TO THIS WEEK >>

Thank you, I heard from a few of you that really like my blog posts. That is enough to keep me going; I had needed to hear from you. And, how about you, have you written to me yet?

I did hear from some people who were flabbergasted from the last blog that I wrote about pooping in the woods and how to save water when you take a shower. I do not hold back, I write about real life and how things are. I want to help you to have a better future and help you through whatever changes you may be going through.

At times, the hardest thing in life is letting go of what might be holding you back. It might be a painful situation you have to overcome, the loss of someone you love, the consequences of a bad choice, an unrewarding job, or even just a negative mindset you can’t release.

We can get stuck in a holding pattern where we focus on the things that we struggle with, then wind up in a cycle of sorrow, stress, and/or frustration.

But, there’s good news—once you let go of whatever hurt, anger, or regret you are holding on to, you’re able to move forward freely. You have the ability to start out new and fresh, on a new path, unencumbered by the weight of the issues you’ve left behind. If you’re standing on the precipice of that new mindset.

I do hope you like reading my words,
please let me know how they might help you.

    MY DAILY JOTTINGS >>

1/19—Went to the weekly meeting of the Plum Branch Community Coffee Hour. I went before, about twenty people meet up to just talk and connect. Today I did some magic for the group, it went over quite well.

Beth and I worked on the painting of the fire room. It went quick and turned out nice, see the photos.

I’ve suggested before, you can easily paint your own abode. That is one thing you can do, for low price, to make your home new and nice. If you have any questions, YouTube will teach you and set you right. Or, give me a call and I will assist how I can—610-400-3233.

1-21—Beth and I are together 24/7. Our love has grown stronger endlessly—stronger and stronger all the time. This makes me so happy, something I was looking for as I was growing older. Yes, whatever age you are, you can find love in your life and help each other to find excellence.

YOUR CHALLENGE FOR THE WEEK >>

I’ve never used or liked the question (or comment), “How are you?” or “How ya doin?” Usually, people don’t mean it when they ask this—question—they just cannot think of something better to say. For this question, my usual answer is I simply say, “Yes I am”. After I say this the conversation goes in a better direction.

What I’ve found is if you say something “nice” about the other person—with enthusiasm—first thing, it will bring better conversation. Such as, “What a nice hairstyle you have” or “Your smile is very attractive” or “Great to see you, you look fantastic”.

My challenge for you this week is not to use this, “question”, at all. Start with this week and do not use the phase, “How are you”, again. There are so many better ways to connect with someone.

Here are some other ideas to use to start a conversation.
(Please don’t use, “How are you?”
    ==========
1 – What’s been on your mind lately?

Allowing your friend to vent about whatever has been on their mind will likely lead to a deeper, more honest conversation. They’ll feel like you really care about them. By asking such a direct question, you’re letting them know that the floor is theirs and you are ready to listen to anything that’s been bothering them.

    2 – How can I support you?
If your friend or relative is handling something particularly stressful, ask them how you can help. At times, it can be comforting just to know that you are there to help and ready to support them. Even if they don’t actually allow you to do anything special for them, like cooking them dinner or babysitting their new dog, it’s good to express that you are there for moral support and are willing to help if need be.

3 – Tell me about your day.

This is a great open-ended way of asking someone how they’re “doing” in a time-bound manner. By inquiring about their day, you are creating an open space for them to talk about whatever has affected their mood or feelings most recently. Plus, you might be able to find more direct ways to help and support them, knowing what’s irritating or distressing them on this particular day.

4 – What’s bringing you joy right now?

There are millions of ways to find joy even in difficult times, no matter what, but for some reason, we are always inclined to focus on the negative. By asking this question, you’ll remind your friend that there is still at least something that’s good in their life. Even if they answer with something rather small—like “I had a great cup of tea this morning” or “I finished reading a wonderful book last night”—pulling a specific example out of them will help them to see that there is joy to be found, even when struggling. A change of mind.

5 – How are you taking care of yourself nowadays?

This is a rather sweet way of sparking a conversation about your friend or family member’s self-care routine, which we all should have. What do they do to make themselves feel better on days when they feel low? Knowing what they’re currently doing to create a little positivity during tough times will give you a better sense of how you can also console or take care of them.

6 – Are you holding up alright?

If you know for a fact that your friend or partner is going through a rough time, it’s nice to ask a question that acknowledges the difficulty head-on. This is also a good way to start the conversation with an undercurrent of empathy; you’re acknowledging that they might not be doing too well right now, and you’re curious in knowing exactly how they’re getting by, so you can help somehow.

7 – I’ve been thinking about you. What’s new in your life?

Telling someone that they’ve been on your mind will instantly make empathy and connection, as they will know that you’re concerned about them. “What’s new?” is a perfect follow-up question, showing them that you’re curious to know what they’ve been doing. Again, this is a powerful open-ended path, creating a dialogue for sharing anything that’s important to them.

8 – Is there anything I can help you with?

Similar to offering your support, you can ask your friend if there is a specific task or activity that you can do to take the pressure off of them. Something as trivial as picking up their prescription drug from the pharmacy or watering their plants could be enough to ease the stress that they feel when things seem overwhelming. Even if they say no, it’s always nice to help in whatever way you can without being asked! The more help you offer the better life you lead.

9 – Are you free for a video chat while we drink coffee?

With the need for social distancing making it more challenging than usual to see friends, offering to video call is the next best thing for some “face-to-face”, catching up on things. You can eve make it feel like you two are hanging out at your favorite cafe by ensuring you both have a cup of warm coffee or tea to sip on as you chat. Having authentic one-on-one time, even if it takes place behind a computer screen, is an ideal way to reconnect and make sure your friend is doing okay.

10 – What were your highs and lows this week?

A final alternative to asking someone how they are is to open a discussion about their high times and low times of the week. This will not only allow them to vent about their main pain points, but it will also make them aware of the positive things that happened too, which will definitely help boost their mood.

Don’t waste your breath asking the question, “How are you?”, there are so many better things you can say. Use your mind to think before you talk.
